Since 2012, FarmVision has been at the forefront of implementing the GENEX Cooperative Development Program (CDP), a project funded by USAID. The overarching goal of the CDP is to fortify the competitiveness of farmer cooperatives, anchored in three principal objectives. Firstly, it aims to bolster cooperative growth and stability by enhancing governance, business acumen, and agricultural expertise. Secondly, the program strives to mitigate economic, market, weather, and production risks. Lastly, it seeks to replicate the CDP strategy, model, and approach for broader impact.
At the heart of GENEX's strategic approach to Cooperative Development lies a program compelling value proposition: the collective strength of farmers working together surpasses what they can achieve individually. However, many farmer organizations often lack the capacity to effectively implement the cooperative business model to address their members' needs or mitigate risks they face. The remedy lies in empowering livestock and crop producers and their cooperatives through access to finance, affordable inputs, markets, expertise, mentoring, and advice.
The success of the program is evident in the on-the-ground observations, quantifiable evidence-based outcomes since 2012, and the resounding calls for support from government stakeholders, industry partners, and local cooperatives. Recognizing the unmet needs and the impact achieved, USAID has approved continued funding to extend the program in South Africa for an additional five years, culminating in 2024. Notably, over 3,000 farmers affiliated with 26 primary and secondary cooperatives across Eastern Cape, KZN, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Gauteng, and Free State have experienced remarkable growth. Sales have surged by 713%, from R19 million to R134 million, while profits have soared by 510%, increasing from R5 million to R24 million. This underscores the tangible positive impact of the Cooperative Development Program on the agricultural landscape.
